Drug Abuse in the Workplace

Drug abuse in America is a problem that affects everyone. Drug abuse is so widespread that the U.S., with 5% of the world’s population, consumes 60% of the entire world’s supply of illicit drugs. With so many people abusing these substances, business owners can’t help but wonder how it affects their company. Decades of research has shown that employers who develop, implement and annually review their drug testing policy can save thousands of dollars in annual costs. There is a new ROI calculator available you can use to learn how much drug use is costing your company and how cost effective having a drug testing program can be.

Facts about Drug Abuse in the Workplace

  1. The US Department of Labor estimates that drug use in the workplaces costs employers $100-$115 billion dollars annually in the form of lost time, accidents, health care and workers’ compensation.
  2. On average, drug abusers cost employers $7,000 to $10,000 a year.
  3. Drug users, on average, are 1/3 less productive, absent or late 16 times more often, 3.6 times more likely to injure themselves or someone else on the job, 6 times more likely to file a workman’s compensation claim, 5 times more likely to injure themselves off the job and incur 300% higher medical costs than non-drug using employees.
  4. 65% of accidents on the job are caused by employees that choose to use illicit drugs.
  5. In a survey of drug-abusers:
    1. 64% admitted that drugs had adversely affected their job performance
    2. 44% said they had sold drugs to other employees
    3. 18% said they had stolen from co-workers to support their habits

It is always best to seek appropriate legal counsel when developing the language for your drug testing policy. Once that policy is in place however, you can count on Occupational health Services to provide you with the highest level of integrity and privacy during the collection process. All of our collection personnel are DOT trained and adhere to the strictest of standards.
