Pandemic Flu Preparation

Our physicians have been sharing and compiling information regarding pandemic flu with other local health organizations. Based on previous history, it seems likely that an influenza pandemic is on the horizon, but an exact year is difficult to predict. It also seems likely that the next flu pandemic will be some sort of variation of avian influenza (bird flu).

We feel it is important to let you know that Via Christi Clinic is watching the situation closely and that we are active community partners in developing strategies to mitigate the effects of such a pandemic as well as planning for such an event should it occur. In fact, we are a key member in the Sedgwick County Pandemic Influenza Work Group. This group is a cadre of local experts in the areas of Pandemic Influenza and our charge is to guide the development of the County and Regional Pandemic Influenza Plan.

It is important, as leaders in our local medical community, that we balance information for our patients so that they are educated and prepared.

In response to the most recent United Nations (UN) information (regarding influenza virus in general and the bird flu specifically) that is getting a great deal of press, please keep in mind the following:

  • Via Christi Clinic usually has a minimum of 25,000 doses of flu vaccine for each flu season.
  • The current avian influenza strain has not mutated adequately to allow human-to-human transmission. Human-to-human transmission will have to occur before a pandemic is possible.
  • Our goal is to maximize our preparedness so if there is a species jump and the virus moves and mutates from the bird population to humans, we are ready to respond, neutralize it, contain it, and delay the development of a major flu pandemic
  • Influenza A and B testing is available at most Via Christi Clinic laboratories.

Please discuss any concerns you have about pandemic flu with your primary care physician.
